The Gender Reel Festival comes to Sexploratorium

In 2010, a group of Philadelphia based organizers and activists came together in response to the lack of transgender inclusion at more mainstream Gay, Lesbian and Bi-sexual (LGB) Film festivals and, Gender Reel, was born. Over the past three years, the festival has received attention from filmmakers, performers, organizations and groups, many of which have signed on to co-sponsor the event, from around the globe. In addition, Gender Reel was voted “best” new film festival in Philadelphia by G Philly Magazine in 2012, prompting organizers to expand the event beyond Philadelphia borders, due to patron demand and interest.

This weekend, the festival tours through it’s hometown with three days of diverse programming with three themes from September 19- 21.

Thursday’s selections showing at Upenn’s Rotunda starting at 6pm focus on Kids & Teens & Families, O My: an evening of films about gender non-conforming children, LGBTQ youth of color, and alternative family structures which are cosponsored by the Global Action Project.
Friday’s Rotunda screenings  of Sensational Shorts & Local Talent: A mixed bag of films from a gender non-conforming serial killer, to a Barbie Doll gone wild in NYC, to a Genderqueer on a mission to find love with films followed by performance art and a panel discussion.
Saturday’s split-venue offerings begin with an afternoon (adults only) double-feature of transgender erotica at the Sexploratorium Community Room (317 South Street, 3rd floor) followed by an evening of international films, first-person narratives of trans men and live music at the Rotunda.
